Tape Research

Something that quickly became apparent when researching 1970's era recordings is that they were recorded with 24 track tape machines.

I would have like to have trialed some original machines from this era, unfortunately, they are expensive and extremely difficult to maintain so this didn't seem feasible. Due to this, it was decided that tape emulation would be a more viable option.

The images below show a 1khz sine wave, before and after the Waves J37 tape emulation is applied. When trying to compare tape with a multi-harmonic sound such as a guitar, it is difficult to see the difference clearly, however, the images here show a clear representation of exactly what happens to a sound.

This extra harmonic information and the compression happening to the original signal replicates the behaviour of a tape machine, hence why this model was chosen for this project.
